Natuna Islands

Facts:

    • The Natuna Islands are situated on the west coast of the South China Sea in the province of Riau Islands, Indonesia.
    • The island is claimed to be part of China’s traditional fishing grounds in the waters surrounding the Natuna islands, according to the country’s nine-dash line claim.

South China Sea:

    • Southeast Asia’s South China Sea is an arm of the western Pacific Ocean. 
    • People’s Republic of China, Taiwan, the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, Singapore, and Vietnam are the bordering countries.
    • The Strait of Malacca, which connects the Indian and Pacific oceans, is of great strategic significance due to its geographical location. 

Conflict: 

    • China asserts its claim to the South China Sea on the basis of the nine-dash line, which passes through the vital Paracel and Spratly island chains and stretches hundreds of miles south and east from its most southern province, Hainan.
