Governmental actions:
- The Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act of 2013 requires that unsanitary latrines be surveyed, demolished, and replaced with sanitary ones.
- For the same reason, the government has been carrying out the Swachh Bharat Mission.
- More than nine crore sanitary latrines have been built as a result of it. India has been proclaimed to be free of open defecation.
- Since 2013–14, surveys conducted by states and a national survey covering 194 districts have identified over 66,000 manual scavengers.
- Along with skill training and a monthly stipend of Rs. 3,000, the manual scavengers and their dependents also receive a subsidy of up to Rs. 3,25,000 on loans they take out for self-employment projects.
- Social organisation reports indicate that in some remote areas of the nation, there is a high prevalence of manual scavenging and unhygienic latrines.
